The Recession and God: A Public Talk by Fr. Gerry O’Hanlon, S.J.

Fr Gerry O’Hanlon SJ, Acting Director of the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice, will give a talk on ‘The Recession and God’, in Manresa, Jesuit Centre of Spirituality, on Thursday, 24 September 2009.

Drawing on Christian tradition, and in particular the values emphasised in Catholic social teaching, Fr O’Hanlon  will argue the need for a searching analysis of the factors that led to the current socio-economic crisis in Ireland and indeed the rest of the world. He will emphasise the need for a new, more socially responsible, economic paradigm, based on a vision of the common good. Rejecting the notion that we should be aiming for a return to 'business as usual', he will urge that we use this time of crisis to commit ourselves to the search for a more sustainable future.  Convinced of the relevance of theological thought for practical living, Fr. O’Hanlon will show how Christian wisdom can inform current debate and bring healing and vitality to a damaged society.
